Favorites List–February 2012

What did people do before Google?  I am very sure I could not survive without its magical ability to conjure up answers to my searches for new material to read, things I want to buy but hardly ever need, and answers to nearly every question I type in (save for “what should I do with my life?”  It’s not God, folks).

In any case, here is a list of what I’ve been reading and coveting this month.  Now you can read and covet, too–luck you.

I love Donald Hall .  Love, love, love his poetry and anything he’s written, really.  And I love his wife, Jane Kenyon.  I would be lying if I said I didn’t drive to his town in NH one time.  Don’t worry, I stopped short of actually finding his house.  That would be weird and stalker-ish.  I do have SOME boundaries.

Really, really wanting to buy this couch cover for my living room makeover.  Also need to convince my mother to give me one of her couches that she’s had for 20 years but no one sits on.  I think I can give it a new life!  My mother doesn’t agree. ;-)

Craving this buttermilk chicken.  Sent Torrey to procure chicken drumsticks today, YUM.

Big fan of this essay on parenting.  Thank you, thank you, for this dose of reality.

Currently reading this book.  And my love affair with Julia continues.

Dying to try this flour combination from the Littleton Grist Mill, which is driveable from my parents’ vacation home in New Hampshire, but you can order it online, too.  Have heard it’s a good alternative to all-purpose.

How adorable is this?  Thinking about buying it for Liam’s room (just don’t snatch it up before I do :-)

Listening to this CD over and over and becoming more and more fascinated with Carole King.

Welcome to The Compound!

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by. I’m not quite sure how to start our first post… it kind of feels like a first date. Have I told you that you have a nice smile yet? Is that awkward?

Ok, now that we have the small talk out of the way, let’s get down it. What is this all about?

This blog is about me and my two sisters. We live next door to each other with our families, in the suburbs south of Boston (we call it “The Compound” because… we’re weird like that. Check out our About page for more). We decided to start this blog because we’re just crazy enough to think we’re interesting ;) And because we think we’ve stumbled across some pretty cool stuff in our time, and we’re super excited to share it with you!

So what’s the jist here? Cut to the chase Kate? Ok ok, here goes. Basically, we’re all going to take turns posting on this site.

About what you ask?

Well… Everything! We share a common obsession with cooking really delicious food using quality ingredients, reading really excellent books, and drinking good wine. I mean… yeah I’m not even going to deny that last one ;)

But we all have pretty unique things to bring to the table too. Janine tends to do really weird and amazing things like make her own cleaning supplies (trust me, it’s easy and you will be instantly hooked).

Theresa is a librarian, and has great taste in books, movies, and music. She also knows tons of rad places in the Boston area, among other things.

And me? Well, I’m into art, and food, and design… The list goes on and on.

But what this blog is really about is Family. Specifically, our family. And all of our crazy shenanigans living in The Compound. Intrigued? Stick around, I promise you’ll have fun and maybe even find out some cool new stuff. And if you have any tips or comments to share with us, we would love to hear from you.

Stay tuned!
